Cancer has many causes.
Environmental Factors: Environmental factors are considered responsible for 80% to 90% of human cancers. The major environmental factors identified so far are:
SNUFF: The various forms of snuff use (eg smoking, chewing) is the leading environmental cause of cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, pharynx, esophagus, bladder, pancreas and kidneys, probably. It has been estimated that smoking isresponsible for more than a million premature deaths each year.
Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption causes cancer of the esophagus and liver. Beer consumption could be associated with rectal cancer.
Dietary factors: smoked fish is related to stomach cancer, dietary fiber, bowel cancer, the consumption of meat from bowel cancer and a diet high in fat for breast cancer. Food additives are also some causative agents.
PROFESSIONALEXHIBITIONS: These include exposure to benzene, arsenic, vinyl chloride, asbestos, polycyclic hydrocarbons, etc. (e)
VIRUS: Hepatitis B and C virus is reported to be associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer.
CUSTOMS AND LIFESTYLE habits and lifestyles of people may be associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. Examples are the link between the snuff and lung cancer, betel nut chewingand oral cancer, etc. There are many other environmental factors such as pollution, sunlight, radiation, air and water, pesticides can cause cancer.
Genetic factors: Genetic influences have long been suspected. For example, retinoblastoma occurs in children of a parent. Mongolian race is more prone to develop cancer (leukemia) than normal children. However, genetic factors are less obvious and more difficult to identify.
